CharGen Portraits — DM
Free
v0.7.0
Windows only. This app runs through the Scryboard App Runner, a free desktop program that's only available for Windows right now. It won't run on a Mac or Linux computer.
Also requires paying these services
- CharGen — Each portrait is billed by CharGen against your own prepaid USD wallet at char-gen.com — separate from anything you pay for this app on the Marketplace. Per-image prices depend on the model (this app uses Flux.Dev, CharGen's cheapest, by default) and are listed in your CharGen developer portal. Nothing generates without you pressing a button, one character at a time. A failed generation is refunded automatically.
- Anthropic (Claude) — Billed against your own Anthropic account at console.anthropic.com — separate from anything you pay for this app or for CharGen. Uses a small, fast model, and only runs when new dialogue arrives AND an exact name match wasn't found, so cost tracks how much unmatched conversation happens, not how long a session runs. Entirely optional: leave the key blank and this step is simply skipped, with no other change in behavior.
This is separate from what this app costs on Scryboard above — a second transaction, paid directly to each service, that Scryboard is not involved in and does not see.
What makes this different
added in session card
Portraits for the NPCs, monsters, locations and magic items in your World Bible, drawn by CharGen (char-gen.com) from the descriptions you already wrote and confirmed. Generate them between sessions, or on the fly: when the party runs into someone, walks into somewhere, or finds something drawable, a card appears at the table if it's already been drawn -- and a DM-only card offers to draw it if it hasn't. Monster portraits stay DM-only so the reveal is yours to time. An optional Anthropic key lets it catch names your speech-to-text mangles (invented fantasy words are notoriously misheard) by re-reading the last few minutes with AI when an exact match comes up empty. A collapsible "Already Drawn" gallery on the landing card lets you review everything generated so far, most recent first.
What this app can access
Reads the list of past and current sessions, verified and proposed campaign canon, the live session transcript, clicks on buttons it shows in its own widgets.
Writes dashboard widget output, images it uploads for Scryboard to store and display, structured data attached to individual confirmed canon items.
Also connects directly to CharGen — reads your CharGen wallet balance and model prices, so the widget can show them; writes the description of a confirmed NPC, monster, location or magic item, to generate one image.
Also connects directly to Anthropic (Claude) — reads nothing beyond the recent transcript and your confirmed names, sent fresh each time — nothing is stored on Anthropic's side by this app; writes the last few minutes of session dialogue, only when a confirmed name can't be found in it word-for-word, to ask whether any of your confirmed characters, locations or items is being discussed.
- Does not read the campaign member roster.
- Does not write to player character sheets.
Requires your own API keys
- CharGen API key — Mint one in the CharGen developer portal at char-gen.com/developers. When creating the key, enable only the 'generate:image' and 'read' scopes — nothing else is used.
- Anthropic API key (optional) — From console.anthropic.com. Only used when a confirmed name can't be found in the transcript word-for-word — it re-reads the last few minutes with AI to catch names your speech-to-text mangled (invented fantasy words are notoriously misheard; ordinary words transcribe fine). Leave blank to skip this — exact matches keep working without it.
- Anthropic workspace ID (optional — only if asked for one) — Only needed if the app's landing card ever shows an error mentioning "anthropic-workspace-id is required" — some Anthropic API keys are tied to your personal console login rather than issued directly to a workspace, and those need this to authenticate. Find it in console.anthropic.com under your workspace's settings. Leave blank otherwise; most keys don't need it.
You'll need to provide these yourself when you install — the App Runner asks for them once and stores them securely on your computer. Any usage costs from that service are between you and its provider; Scryboard is not involved and does not see the cost.
